WELLESLEY, Mass -- No. 3 Wellesley College tennis advanced to the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals with a 5-0 win over No. 6 Springfield College in quarterfinal action on Saturday afternoon at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.
With the opening round victory, Wellesley improves to 13-8 overall, while Springfield concludes the season with a final record of 11-6. The Blue will be looking to advance to the NEWMAC title match for the first time since the 2016-17 season when they take on Babson in the semifinals on Tuesday, April 30, at 3:30 PM.
Wellesley's top doubles pairing of junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) defeated Springfield senior Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.), 8-2, to put the Blue up 1-0. In the No. 2 doubles slot, Blue senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) downed Springfield first years Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) and first year Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.), 8-0. An 8-3 Wellesley win by first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) over junior Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) and senior Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) completed the doubles sweep for the Blue.
Leading 3-0 heading into singles, Peng put the Blue within a point of the victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. However, the Pride extended the match with both Parrish and Freadman rallying for set victories at No. 1 and No. 3. After Huang took a 6-2 win in the first set at No. 1, Parrish extended the match to a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. Freadman opened with a 6-4 win over Markwart at No. 3 and was leading 3-2 in the second set at the time the match concluded. With Markwart trailing Freadman and Huang and Parrish locked in a 3-3 third set, Shen stepped-up to clinch the match for the Blue with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Malz at No. 4 singles.
The Blue will face Babson for the fifth consecutive season in the NEWMAC semifinals when the crosstown rivals meet on Tuesday afternoon.
