WELLESLEY, Mass.-- Wellesley College lacrosse dropped a 13-7 setback against Wheaton College on Wednesday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. The Blue are now 0-12 in their season and drop to 0-4 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton improves to 5-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Senior Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) paced the Lyons with four goals, a game-high five draw controls, and two caused turnovers. First year Danielle Trudeau (West Springfield, Mass.) netted a hat trick in the victory. Sophomore Kyra Schwartzman (Kennebunk, Maine) and first year Maggie Dymes (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) both recorded two tallies. Junior Amy Livermore (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Molly Covarrubias (Framingham, Mass.) rounded out scoring for Wheaton with one goal apiece.
First year Louise Conaty (Wilmington, Del.) led Wellesley goal scorers with two goals, one caused turnover, and three ground balls. Juniors Ellie Chalphin (Philadelphia, Pa.), Dacia Persky (Las Vegas, Nev.), Olivia Strobl (Stafford, Va.), Mariana Hernandez (Orlando, Fla.), and senior Jenny Gubner (Pleasanton, Calif.) completed scoring for the Blue, all netting one goal each.
Dymes put the Lyons on the board first at 25:01 on a free position shot . Strobl answered on a feed from Persky at 24:16 to give Wellesley their first goal of the day. The sides exchanged goals from Livermore and Gubner before Schwartzman sparked a five-goal Wheaton run that gave the Lyons a 7-2 lead at 15:46. Chalphin answered back to give Wellesley their final goal of the half at 3:30 to cut the Wellesley deficit to 7-3, but Peters and Trudeau scored back-to-back goals for Wheaton at 2:11 and 0:36 to help the Lyons take a 9-3 advantage heading into halftime.
Schwartzman extended Wheaton's lead when she scored the first goal of the second half at 20:03 with help from Livermore to make it 10-3. Persky netted her first of the game at 14:48 as the Blue trailed 10-4. Conaty then tallied back-to-back goals for Wellesley at 12:46 and 10:04 to bring the Blue within five at 11-6. Hernandez took a feed from senior Mayu Kikuchi (Villanova, Pa.) to score the final goal for Wellesley at 1:21. Wheaton secured their win at 0:43 when Covarrubias scored to make the final, 13-7. For Conaty, the two-goal effort was the first of her career.
Despite the setback, Wellesley held the advantage in ground balls, 25-19, and shots, 32-23, however Wheaton took the advantage in draw controls, 12-10.
Wellesley junior goalkeeper Chloe Tucker (San Ramon, Calif.) made seven saves in the contest. Senior Molly Witten (Bethesda, Md.) earned the win for Wheaton with 16 saves and improves to 5-3 on the year. Senior Galicia Rothe (Key Biscayne, Fla.) had one save in her six minutes of relief.
Wellesley will play again at home on Saturday, April 14 at 12:00 PM for their senior day game against Mount Holyoke. Wheaton will also play on Saturday as they host Springfield at 1:00 PM.
