Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Overtime Tally from Summers Lifts Field Hockey Past Salve Regina, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey sophomore Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) scored in overtime to give the Blue (3-7 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC) a key 1-0 victory over Salve Regina University at Butler Stadium on Saturday.

After 60 scoreless minutes, Summers wasted little time, finding the cage two minutes and 52 seconds into the extra period off of a penalty stroke. The goal marks a team-leading fourth of the year for the sophomore forward and marked three straight games with a score.

Sophomore Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) went eight for eight on saves to collect a shutout.

The Seahawks (8-2 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC) were led by 10 shots from senior Georgia Costello (North Easton, Mass.). First-year Siany Ortez (Attleboro, Mass.) stopped eight shots throughout the affair, only allowing the single score in OT.

Salve Regina had a 26-12 edge in shots taken, though it was Wellesley with the 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Both teams will host NEWMAC games on Tuesday, October 7. The Blue will welcome Mount Holyoke College for its Faculty/Staff Appreciation Game at 6:00 PM. The Seahawks play Clark University at 6:00 PM.
