WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis players Sojung Lee and Carina Chen swept the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards for the period ending September 22nd.
Lee, a junior, was named the NEWMAC Singles Player of the Week, while Lee and Chen, a first-year, were awarded NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week honors. This is the first singles honor for Lee this season, and the second for Lee and Chen in doubles.
As a doubles pair, Lee and Chen went 3-0 for the Blue this week, including two wins over NEWMAC opponents and a victory over a nationally ranked pair from Williams. The duo breezed through their NEWMAC matches, recording an 8-2 victory over the top pair from Mount Holyoke, and an 8-0 win over Clark's top team. Wrapping up the week in dramatic fashion, Lee and Chen recorded a 9-8(7-1) victory over Williams' Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran, the fifth ranked doubles team in the country.
Lee also won both of her singles matches this week, playing at the top of the line-up for the Blue. She opened the week with a 6-0, 6-3, win over AnnElizabeth Konkel of Mount Holyoke, helping Wellesley to the NEWMAC sweep. Lee topped off her week with a thrilling come-from-behind win over nationally-ranked Rebecca Curran of Williams, taking the match 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
In doubles, Lee and Chen have combined for a perfect 6-0 record this season, while Lee is 4-1 in singles matches this season.
Wellesley tennis is back in action at the 2013 ITA Regional Championships this weekend at Williams. The individual event features brackets in both singles and doubles. Lee and Chen will represent the Blue, along with teammate Andjela Stojkovic.
