WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team will open the spring portion of their season with a #24 national ranking. The Blue moved up a spot from the fall season on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division III top-30 list. Wellesley joined MIT as the only NEWMAC schools on the list.
Wellesley kicks off the spring season on Saturday, March 30th at Tufts University and will play a full slate of matches against tough regional and nationally-ranked opponents. The Blue will also host the second annual Nor'Easter Bowl from Friday, April 5th through Sunday, April 7th, a "March Madness"-type event featuring eight nationally-ranked teams. The event will also serve host to a "Senior Day" celebration for Wellesley's Elena Bowen.
The Blue ended their fall season with an overall record of 8-3 and a NEWMAC record of 6-1. Wellesley advanced to the NEWMAC Championship where they fell to top-seeded MIT 5-0.
Three returning members of the team were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team in the fall. Sophomore Sojung Lee earned a first-team selection in the number three singles spot, after going 7-2 in dual matches. She was also paired with junior Diana Granger at number one doubles on the All-Conference second-team. The duo compiled an overall record of 7-3, going 5-1 in the NEWMAC.
Junior Catherine Matulis also earned a second-team selection at number four singles. She compiled a 6-2 overall record, including a 5-1 NEWMAC mark.
