BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Wellesley tennis players Marie Watanabe and Sojung Lee were named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week for the period ending October 16th.
Watanabe, a senior, and Lee, a first-year, went 3-1 during the week, including a win over NEWMAC-rival Babson and a 2-1 record at the Bowdoin Invitational. This is the second time they have been honored with the conference's weekly award.
Against Babson, the pair gritted out a 9-7 victory at one doubles over Alex Freeman and Sarah Whitaker. At the Babson Invitational, Watanabe and Lee finished as the flight runner-up, with their only loss coming at the hands of 2011 All-Americans, Kellen Alberstone and Kate Winingham. The Blue duo defeated number one doubles teams from Rochester and Bates during the tournament.
Overall this season, Watanabe and Lee are 9-3 with an impressive 7-1 mark in dual meets.
Wellesley tennis finished the regular season with a perfect 7-0 mark in NEWMAC play. The team now gears up for the 2011 NEWMAC Championship, which will be held this weekend at Babson College. The Blue, seeded first, received a first-round bye and will play the winner of #5 Mount Holyoke and #4 Wheaton on Saturday at 11:00am in the semifinals.
