Stingy Second-Half Defense Leads Blue Lacrosse to 13-9 Win Over Eastern Connecticut

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College lacrosse team held visiting Eastern Connecticut State University to just one second half goal, en route to a 13-9 victory on a windy afternoon in Wellesley. The win lifts the Blue to 6-4 overall, while the Warriors dip to 3-5 overall.

Eastern held an 8-7 edge at the break, but Wellesley shut down the Warriors in the second half. Blue keeper 
Tori Hysko saved eight of the nine shots she faced in the period, while the Blue defense forced 12 turnovers. Meanwhile, Wellesley scored six of the half's seven goals, to earn the 13-9 win.

Brit Mscisz
 paced the hosts with five goals and two assists for seven total points, while Meredith Roy recorded four goals and an assist for five points. Roy also led Wellesley with team-highs of six ground balls and three draw controls. Rounding out the Blue offense, Allison Robbins recorded two goals and an assist, while Elizabeth Clemetson and Claire Canty also recorded goals.

Defensively for Wellesley, 
Kaitlyn Kirkaldy led the way with three caused turnovers, while also picking up two ground balls. Alyssa Andres recorded two caused turnovers while Meagan Fuchs scooped up three ground balls. Hysko finished the day with 13 total saves to earn the win in goal.

Eastern's Daniela Marchitto accounted for over half of the Warriors' offense, recording five goals on the afternoon. Sandy Scarpa, Taylor Buchanan, Ashley Wolk, and Meg Eremita added solo goals to round out the scoring. Wolk and Erin Conn each recorded four draw controls, as Eastern held a 15-9 edge in the category.

On the other side of the ball for the visitors, Rachel Meotti recorded three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Taylor Shannon had a team-high six ground balls. In goal for the Warriors, Haley Heslin notched five total saves.

Eastern got on the board just 30 seconds into the game on a Wolk score, but Wellesley battled back with two straight from Roy to go up 2-1. Eastern answered with a pair of their own to re-gain a 3-2 edge at 18:47, but just over two minutes later, Wellesley got a Canty score to knot the game at 3-3.

Eastern scored twice more over the next six minutes of play, but each time, Wellesley answered to keep the game tight. The Blue eventually took over the lead with a Mscisz score at 7:56, but Eastern ended the half on a 3-1 run, as two goals from Marchitto and one from Buchanan made it 8-7 Warriors at the break. 

Wellesley opened the second half with a quick score from Robbins to knot the game at 8-8. The Blue then put together a 5-1 run, to put the game out of reach. Mscisz scored three times for Wellesley in the half, while Marchitto netted Eastern's lone goal.

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday, hosting NEWMAC-foe Wheaton in a 4:30pm conference clash. Eastern Connecticut next hosts Keene State on Saturday in an 11:00am LEC match-up.
