Wellesley Hosts NCAA Fencing Regional on Sunday; Blue Qualify Nine to Compete
WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College will serve as the host site for the 2014 NCAA Northeast Fencing Regional on Sunday, March 9th. In addition to hosting responsibilities, the Blue have qualified nine student-athletes to compete in the event, which features the best fencers in Divisions I, II and III, from the Northeast Region.
Wellesley will be represented by epee fencers, Kathryn Ledbetter, Charlotte Treadwell, and Courtney Collins; foil fencers Jessica Guo, Pamela Wang, and Camille Samulski; and sabre fencers Dania Wright, Alice Xu, and Jasmine Davis.
Wright, a senior, leads the way for the Blue, making her fourth-straight appearance at the NCAA regionals. She's picked up 21 wins against NCAA opponents this year and has 36 total victories. Last year, Wright finished the NCAA regional in 32nd place, including 14th in Division III.
Ledbetter, a junior, will be making her third trip to the NCAA event. She has 30 wins against NCAA opponents (48 total), and is looking to to improve on her 43rd place finish (15th in D-III) a year ago.
Juniors Treadwell and Samulski will both be making their second NCAA regional appearances. Treadwell was Wellesley's highest finisher at last year's event, ranking 36th overall, 11th in Division III. She has 39 total wins this year, 24 against NCAA competition. Samulski ranked 19th in Division III at last year's event and has 23 total wins this year.
Collins, a senior, will be making her first NCAA appearance after battling through injury. She's seen limited action this season, but has seven total wins.
Four Blue first-years will also be making their first trip to the NCAA event this Sunday, as Guo, Wang, Davis, and Xu have each qualified in their rookie seasons. Guo is the team leader in wins with 34 against NCAA opponents and 51 overall, while Wang has 27 NCAA wins and 42 overall. Davis and Xu round out the qualifiers and have totals of 28 and 24 wins this season.
