Wesleyan Field Hockey Blanks Wellesley, 2-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --  The Wellesley College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision on the road to Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening in a non-conference tilt. The victory extending the Cardinals win streak against non-conference opponents to 12 games over the last three seasons.

Wesleyan (2-2) got a goal and an assist each from seniors Morgan McCauley and Liz Chabot while junior netminder Tori Redding notched six saves for her first shutout of the season to seal the victory.  The Cardinals have beaten the Blue the last three seasons but Wellesley (4-3) still holds the edge in the all-time series, 12-9-1.

Wesleyan got on the board 18:59 into the contest when McCauley took a pass to the right side from Chabot, who had control in the middle.  McCauley fired a low shot that caught the net to the far side past Wellesley sophomore keeper Brit Mscisz, who ended the contest with four stops, as both teams put six shots on net.

Chabot then completed a Wesleyan rush at 25:39 as she found the net past a fallen Mscisz, who had gone down during a flurry in front of the Wellelsey net.  Vanessa Block got the scoring play started with a feed into the middle.  The ball was initially cleared as Mscisz hit the turf, but Wesleyan kept the ball alive as McCaluey put it back toward the middle for Chabot to poke home.

Wellesley had its best scoring chances near the end of each half as a shot by first-year Lallie Lukens was stopped by Redding, as well as a follow up by junior Allison Robbins, in the first period.  A resulting corner led to a third shot in less than a minute, also by Lukens, all in the game's 30th minute.  Two shots by the Blue in the final minute of the game tested Redding as well, those coming from Robbins and junior Emily Lewis.  But Redding stood tall and preserved the shutout.

Wesleyan hosts Williams in a Little Three and NESCAC battle Sat., Sept. 24 in its next start.  Wellesley travels to Mount Holyoke for a NEWMAC contest on Saturday.
